Bishop Deenihan Leads Pilgrimage Marking Franciscan Jubilee Year

Bishop Deenihan accompanies pilgrims from across the Diocese of Meath on pilgrimage to Assisi and Padua marking the Franciscan Jubilee Year.

During their pilgrimage, pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of St. Anthony, visiting the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua and Camposampiero and the peaceful Sanctuary of the Vision where it is said St. Anthony experienced a mystical vision of the Christ Child. Pilgrims will also visit the famous Sanctuary of the Walnut Tree where Anthony is said to have lived and prayed in a small cell built in its branches during his final days in 1231. While in Padua, pilgrims will visit the Sanctuary of St. Leopold Mandic, built in the 16th century.

Enroute to Assisi, pilgrims will visit Loreto, which according to tradition houses the Holy House of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth.

During their time in Assisi, the pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of St. Clare and St. Francis, visiting the resting place of St. Carlo Acutis, the young Italian known for his devotion to the Eucharist and use of technology to spread the faith.

The pilgirmage will conclude with Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in the 16th century. Today, it is one of the most sacred Franciscan sites, symbolising humility, forgiveness and the origins of the Order.

St. Francis, St. Clare and St. Carlo, pray for us.
