World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly 2023

On Sunday, July 23, 2023, the Second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated throughout the universal Church. The theme chosen by the Holy Father for the occasion is "His mercy is from age to age" (Lk. 1:50 ) and emphasizes how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a gift both for society and for ecclesial communities.

Pope Francis chose the theme to tie the celebration of the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly to World Youth Day, which will be celebrated just over a week later, in Lisbon, Portugal.

The invitation to listen to the wisdom of the years is also particularly significant in the context of the synodal journey that the Church has undertaken.

Pope Francis celebrated the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021 and decreed that it be observed each year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus’ grandparents.
