Diocese Celebrates the Role of Religious

The Diocese recently celebrated Sung Vespers from the Liturgy of the Hours in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar in advance of the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, on 2 February. Celebrating the Day for Consecrated Life in the Diocese, Bishop Deenihan, presided over the customary blessing of candles and procession. During the annual celebration, the diocese gave thanks to God for the work of religious communities throughout the diocese for their service to healthcare, education, and parish ministry, as well as those consecrated to the eremitical life and contemplative prayer.

The occasion also marked the 40th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Bishop Michael Smith.

Bishop Deenihan presided over Evening Prayer, in the presence of Bishop Smith, Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin, Bishop Paul Connell of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, retired Archbishop of Dublin, along with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor. Priests, religious, and faithful from all over the diocese gathered for Evening Prayer.

Fr. John Harris, OP, the Provincial of the Irish Dominicans preached the homily.
