Bishop Smith Celebrates 40 Years

In Christo Confido - (Bishop Smith's episcopal motto)

Bishop Smith Celebrates 40 Years

This week, Bishop Michael celebrates the 40th anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of the diocese and Titular Bishop of Leges on 17 November 1983 and was consecrated on 29 January 1984. The principal consecrator was Tomás Cardinal Ó Fiaich; his principal co-consecrators were Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, and Cahal Daly, Bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor. On 13 October 1988, he was appointed coadjutor bishop and on the 16 May 1990 he succeeded Bishop John McCormack on his retirement.

As the diocese celebrates the fortieth Anniversary of Bishop Michael's Episcopal Ordination, we thank the Lord for his prayerful witness and example, his unwavering fidelity and steadfast service to the Church. May the Lord continue to bless him with good health, contentment, and the support of our prayers.

Ad multos annos!
