Ordination of Rev. Fergal Cummins in Maynooth College
Fergal Cummins (28) from Ashboure was ordained a Deacon in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on Sunday 27 May.
Joined at the ceremony by his paretns JJ and Frances Cummins and his sister Marie, Fergal will serve as deacon in the Diocese of Meath where he will be ordained a priest later this year.
Before entering the seminary at Maynooth in 2012, the new deacon studied Environmental Science at DIT Bolton Street and worked in human resources at the Mater Private Hospital. A keen cyclist and soccer player, Fergal will assist in St Mary’s Parish, Drogheda during the summer period.
Speaking during the ordination ceremony, Archbishop Martin said:
"The challenge of witnessing to Jesus Christ in today’s world is not an easy one. Many will see the results of Friday’s referendum as an indication that the Catholic Church in Ireland is regarded today by many with indifference. The Church that is called to make present the Jesus who is full of mercy and compassion is seen by many as somehow weak in compassion. Reshaping the Church of tomorrow must be marked by a radical rediscovery of its roots."
